ugc.ls Position-list for locating UGC galaxies by number
CONTENTS: galaxies from the Uppsala Galaxy Catalog
DATASET: These files come in HyperSky dataset G-1, version 19930522. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993).
DESCRIPTION: The UPPSALA GENERAL CATALOG OF GALAXIES by Peter Nilson, was originally presented to the Royal Society of Sciences of Uppsala, Sweden, in 1971. The HyperSky version is based on a computer-readable copy of the catalog made available through sources at the University of Texas.
The catalog is based on the Palomar Sky Survey, and was designed to be complete to the limiting diameter of 1'.0 on the blue prints. It also contains all galaxies to limiting magnitude 14.5 (even those < 1'.0) in the CATALOG OF GALAXIES AND CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES (CGCG) by Zwicky et al.
Position-list UGC.LS, included as an installation option, lets you set your field position on a UGC galaxy by selecting it from the list. See manual page UGC.MLS for more details.
DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:
MAG: Apparent photographic magnitude from CGCG (Zwicky) or estimated from the Palomar Sky Survey blue prints if fainter than 15.7.
IDENTIFICATION: The UGC number
COMMENTS: Two possible comment lines can appear for each galaxy, containing the following information if available:
* MCG number from the Russian MORPHOLOGICAL CATALOG OF GALAXIES (Morfologiceskij Katalog Galaktik) by Vorontsov-Veljaminov et al.
* Galaxy type, size (blue light) and position angle.
Type is given in a short string 7 characters or less, and is mostly self explanatory. Types starting with 'S', signifying a spiral, are most common. 'E' signifies an elliptical.
Size is given in the general form DDxdd', where DD is the major axis and dd is the minor axis. Both are in arc minutes.
Position angle is given in the format PA=ddd, where ddd is degrees.
POSITION-LIST: Position-list UGC.LS contains equinox 2000 positions of all galaxies in the Uppsala galaxy catalog, and is intended to allow you to quickly set your field center position at the location of any UGC galaxy simply by selecting its number from the position-list.
Because of the number of galaxies in the UGC (nearly 13000), the list has three levels: a thousands menu, a hundreds menu, and finally individual lists of galaxies. For example, to set your HyperSKY field center at the position of UGC galaxy 1234, you would select group "1000 - 1999" from the toplevel menu, then select group 1200 from the second level menu, and finally select 1234 from the resulting UGC galaxy list.
Remember that this list is only a position-list; it does not display or identify the UGC galaxy at the position you select. A UGC galaxy will be displayed at the HyperSky field position only if you have also loaded HyperSKY UGC galaxy catalog files UGC1.G0, UGC2.G0 and UGC3.G0.
