STRASBRG (N1): Strasbourg Galactic Planetary Nebulae (19930420)
FILE: strasbrg.n1 (1455 objects)
CONTENTS: Strasbourg Catalog of Galactic Planetary Nebulae
DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset N-0, version 19930420 (part of the original basic dataset supplied with HyperSky). Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993)
DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains a total of 1455 planetary nebulae in the machine-readable version of the Strasbourg Catalog of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (Acker et al., 1981), as provided on the NASA/GSFC Astronomical Data Center cd-rom "Selected Astronomical Catalogs", Vol 1. The original version of the machine-readable dataset was supplied by the Centre de Donnees Stellaires. The following quote from the related paper by Acker et al (1981) summarizes the intent of the catalog:
The aim of this catalog is to provide a list of data concerning all known planetary nebulae (PN). The total number is 1455 including 1036 listed in Perek and Kohoutek (PK) catalog (1967), and including including doubtful cases. The additions come from Sanduleak (1975, 1976), Acker and Marcout (1977), Weinberger (1977), Peterson (1977), Kohoutek (1978), Stephenson (1978), Allen (1979), Murdin et al. (1979), Van den Bergh (1979), Purgathofer and Weinberger (1980).
DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:
COORDINATES: Equatorial coordinates are stored in the datafile at equinox 2000, having been precessed from equinox 1950 coordinates in the Strasbourg catalog.
MAG: the visual magnitude provided in the Strasbourg catalog.
IDENTIFICATION: The Perek-Kohoutek (PK) number, composed of the 1950.0 galactic latitude and longitude truncated to the nearest degree. Appended to this is an integer representing the planetary's position in that 1-by-1 degree area, from north to south.
COMMENTS: The comment lines contain the following information, provided if available for each planetary:
* One or more optional lines containing additional identifications. These identifications are not part of the Strasbourg catalog, but were obtained from various other sources. They can include:
M: Messier catalog number.
NGC: New General Catalog number.
IC: Index Catalog number.
Sh2: Sharpless HII region catalog number.
RCW: Rodgers, Campbell & Whiteoak H-alpha emission survey number.
Common name (eg, Ring nebula).
* A line starting with "central star:", identifying the central star. These identifications are not part of the Strasbourg catalog, but were obtained from various other sources. They can include:
CRL: Cambridge Research Laboratory infrared survey number.
Variable star desgination (eg, CW Leo).
* A line starting with "star mag=", giving the visual magnitude of the central star.
* A line starting with "dia=", giving the angular diameter of the planetary. Units are indicated by the character after the number:
A single quote (') indicates minutes of arc;
a double quote (") indicates seconds of arc.
* A line starting with "rv=", giving the mean radial velocity of the nebula in km/sec.
Positive(+) values indicate recession;
negative(-) values indicate approach.
* A line starting with "ev=", giving the mean expansion velocity of the nebula in km/sec.
* A line containing a nebula morphology comment, if applicable: either "starlike" or "faint envelope".
ERRATA: The following error in the Strasbourg data was found during random examination of the catalog with HyperSky. Other errors may also exist.
NGC 3132 - ("Eight-burst planetary") The Strasbourg catalog Declination is apparently incorrect, being too far south by 1 degree. Correct 2000 position is RA= 10h 07.0m, Dec= -40d 26'
