SNE_SALM (G0): Supernova Search Cards; Sets 1 and 2 (19910405)
FILE: sne_salm.g0 (90 galaxies, -1 < Dec < 90)

CONTENTS: Supernova Search Cards: Sets 1,2; J. Salmi

DATASET: This file is part of HyperSky dataset G-8 (G-8.4), version 19910405. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993)

DESCRIPTION: This file is a cross-reference to all galaxies pictured in the two sets of photographic cards of galaxies published by Juhani Salmi of Finland, intended for use in checking for supernovae. The two sets of spiral-bound photographic cards (about 4x5 inches) each contain 40 photographs made with a 12" (305mm) Newtonian f/6.4 reflector using 103a-=O film. Exposure times range anywher from 7 to 33 minutes; with most in the 20-minute range. Because some photographs contain more than one galaxy, there are a total of 90 galaxy images available. In the United States the card sets are available through Herbert Luft and the Astronomical League Book Service.

The purpose of the photographic card sets is to provide supernova hunters with quick and easy references to images of northern galaxies (only one is barely south of the celestial equator). Though not square most images cover roughly a half-degree centered on the galaxy.

DATA: The HyperSky files provide the following data for each galaxy. Unless otherwise noted, the data is taken directly from tables at the back of each of the search card sets.

POSITION: Because Mr. Salmi does not give the Right Ascension and Declination to the highest available precision, the positions in these files have been extracted where possible from the NGC 2000 catalog (Roger Sinnott, editor).

MAG: The magnitude given in the search card tables, presumed visual. For a few galaxies not explicitly listed in the tables, the visual magnitude from the NGC 2000 catalog has been used.

TYPE: a brief 2-character code indicating the galaxy type. The first letter in all cases will be 'G' indicating a galaxy. The second letter is coded as follows: 'e'=elliptical; 'i'=irregular; 'p'=peculiar; 's'=spiral.

IDENTIFICATION: the galaxy identification as used on the atlas. Most are NGC (New General Catalog) numbers, but one is an IC (Index Catalog) number. Messier number are also included for appropriate galaxies.

COMMENTS: The comments for each galaxy usually include at least two lines. The first line will contain the Hubble classification, as given in the NGC 2000. Following this on the same line will be the galaxy dimensions from the search card tables. This will take the form Dxd, where D and d are the longest and shortest dimensions. An example would be 3.2x1.1' where the single quote indicates units of arc minutes.

The second line will indicate the search card set in which the galaxy image can be found. For some galaxies which appear on cards named for other galaxies, the name of the other galaxy will also be indicated.
