SMC_LUM (S0): Catalog of Probable Members of the SMC, 1979 (19950208)
FILE: smc_lum.s0 (506 stars)

CONTENTS: Catalog of Probable Members of the Small Magellanic Cloud, 1979

DATASET: This file is part of HyperSky dataset S-25, version 19950208. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 2 (1995)

DESCRIPTION: This file contains a catalog of 506 luminous stars found using an objective prism survey conducted for the purpose of finding probable members of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Interference filters were used to restrict the wavelength range and thus decrease the background and crowding. The limiting absolute magnitude of the survey is about -4.5. The 1975 paper lists 506 stars that show high luminosity characteristics; 193 of them having been confirmed by other authors.

The HyperSky file for this catalog is a "small-scale" datafile. That is, the file covers only a relatively small area of the sky covered by the SMC. The equinox 2000 coordinate range of catalog members is 0h43m < RA < 1h22m and -74 < Dec < -71. HyperSky treats such small-scale files in a special way: it will display only the outline of the catalog area, NOT its contents, until you reduce the HyperSky field scale appropriately.

The HyperSky file is based on a version of the catalog available through the U.S. National Space Sciences Data Center (NSSDC) as Astronomical Data Center (ADC) catalog #5013A.

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: The catalog's equinox 1975 positions, precessed to equinox 2000 for the HyperSky file. The catalog records Right Ascension to an accuracy of 0.01 minute, and Declination to 0.1 arc minute accuracy.

MAG: The catalog's visual magnitude rounded to the nearest 0.1 mag. Catalog magnitudes were given to an accuracy of 0.01 magnitude. Magnitudes were not provided for all catalog stars.

TYPE: The star's MK spectral classification, as given in the catalog.

IDENTIFICATION: The running catalog star number, from 1 to 506.

COMMENTS: The comment lines contain the following additional information, provided if available for each star:

* The values B-V and U-B, each to an accuracy of .01 magnitude.
