RADIO_4C (E0): Fourth Cambridge Radio Survey Catalog, 1967 (19930525)
FILE:radio_4c.e0 (4844 entries)

CONTENTS: Fourth Cambridge Radio Survey Catalog, -7 < Dec < +80

DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset E-3, version 19930525. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993)

DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains a total of 4844 entries from the FOURTH CAMBRIDGE RADIO SURVEY CATALOG. The catalog resulted from a survey of radio sources between declinations -7 and +80 degrees using the large Cambridge inteferometer at 178 MHz, and is based on papers of Pilkington and Scott (1965, Mem. Roy. Astron. Soc. 69, 183) and Gower, Scott and Wills (1967, Mem. Roy. Astron. Soc. 71, 49.).

The HyperSky catalog file is based on the machine-readable version of the catalog, as provided on the NASA/GSFC Astronomical Data Center (ADC) cd-rom "Selected Astronomical Catalogs", Volume 1.

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: Right Ascension and Declination are based on the 1950 catalog values, precessed to equinox 2000.

MAG: no magnitudes are provided in the catalog.

IDENTIFICATION: The 4C catalog number.

COMMENTS: The comment lines contain the following information, provided if available for each radio source identification:

* A line beginning with "f(178)=" giving the radio source strength (flux density) measured at a radio frequency of 178 megahertz. Measurement units are janskys (originally flux units). One jansky equals 1E-26 watt per square meter per hertz.

The vast majority of the 4C sources have strengths below 10 janskys. A much smaller number have strengths between 10 and 100 janskys, and a very few powerful sources have strengths in excess of 1000 janskys.

* The equivalent (3C) identification in the Third Cambridge Catalog.
