NEARBY3 (S0): Preliminary Third Catalog of Nearby Stars (19930528)
FILE: nearby3.s0 (3802 stars)

CONTENTS: Third Catalog of Nearby Stars, Preliminary Version

DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset S-16, version 19930528. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993)

DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains a total of 3802 stars from the PRELIMINARY VERSION OF THE THIRD CATALOG OF NEARBY STARS, by Wilhelm Gliese and Hartmut Jahreiss of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Heidelberg, Germany. It contains all known stars within 25 parsecs of the Sun, and depends mainly on a preliminary version (Spring 1989) of the new General Catalogue of Trigonometric Parallaxes (YPC) prepared by Dr. William F. van Altena (Yale University).

Included are all stars with trigonometric parallax greater than or equal to 0.0390 arcsec, even when photometry or other evidence indicates the star has a larger distance.

The HyperSky catalog file is based on the machine-readable version of the catalog, as provided on the NASA/GSFC Astronomical Data Center (ADC) cd-rom "Selected Astronomical Catalogs", Volume 1. The HyperSky file retains all catalog entries except that for the Sun.

Usage note: In order to easily find stars from this catalog in a general star field, you can use HyperSky menu options to highlight all stars from this catalog with horizontal tickmarks, vertical tickmarks, or both.

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: Right Ascension and Declination are based on the 1950 catalog values, precessed to equinox 2000.

MAG: the apparent visual magnitudes as provided in the catalog, which range from -1.4 to 21.

TY: the spectral type abbreviated to two letters, extracted from the full spectral type, as provided in the comments (see below).

IDENTIFICATION: One of the catalog identifiers, used as available in the following order:
* Gl (Gliese), GJ (Gliese & Jahreiss), or Wo (Woolley et al.)
* HD (Henry Draper catalog) number
* BD (Bonner), CD (Cordoba) or CP (Cape Photographic) Durchmusterung catalog number
* G (Giclas) id, in the form Gnnn-mmm where nnn and mmm are numbers
* LHS (Luyten High-velocity Star) number
* "Anon." (anonymous), if none of the above identifiers is provided

COMMENTS: The comment lines contain the following information, provided if available for each star:

* A line starting with "sp=" giving the full spectral tupe.

* A line starting with "B-V=" giving the B-V color index. B-V catalog values noted as uncertain will be followed by a colon. The U-B color index will follow on the same line, again followed by a colon if noted as uncertain.

* A line starting with "RV=" giving the radial velocity in km/sec. Postive values indicate recession, negative values indicate approach.

* A line starting with "PM=" giving the annual proper motion in arc seconds. A second value, separated by a slash (/), gives the proper motion direction angle measured from North through East, rounded here to whole degrees.

* A line starting with "plx=" giving the trigonometric parallax in arc seconds. A second value, following in parentheses, gives the associated standard error, also in arc seconds.

* Multiple lines starting with "=", giving all identifications listed above not already used as the primary idenitification.
