CONTENTS: Catalog of Galactic Globular Clusters; R. Monella, 1985

DATASET: These files come in HyperSky dataset S-23, version 19950122. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 2 (1995)

DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains 160 globular clusters from the 1985 catalog by R. Monella of Sharru Astronomical Observatory, COVO (Bergamo), Italy.

The catalog collects all important data concerning currently known galactic globular clusters. Included are data from well-known catalogs such as those of Arp (1965), Alter et al. (1970), Alcaino (1973). Added are data concerning recently found new clusters (TER, ESO, UKS, TJ), up to and including KOD 1, found by K. Kodaira in July 1983 (IAUC 3846). Particular care was taken in obtaining the most reliable information available, which was then homogenized for presentation in the catalog. For the most recently found clusters, however, the data is still fragmentary and subject to errors.

The HyperSky file is based on the version of the catalog available at the Centre de Donnees Stellaires (CDS), Strasbourg, France (cat.# VII/103).

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: Right Ascension and Declination are based on the catalog 1950 positions, precessed to equinox 2000. Catalog positions were provided to an accuracy of 1 second in Right Ascension and 0.1' in declination.

MAG: The apparent photovisual integrated magnitude of the cluster as provided in the catalog.

IDENTIFICATION: The common name of the cluster.

COMMENTS: The comment line contains the following information, provided if available for each cluster:

* A line starting with "dis=", giving the catalog cluster distance in kiloparsecs (kpc), followed in parentheses by the approximate equivalent distance in light years (ly), calculated using the relation: ly = kpc * 3260.

* A line starting with "dia =", giving the catalog cluster diameter in arcminutes ('), followed in parentheses by the real cluster diameter in light years (ly), converted from the catalog parsec (pc) value using the relation: ly = pc * 3.26.

* A line indicating whether the cluster is "Compact" or "Loose", based on the corresponding code in the catalog.

NOTEFILE: Each cluster entry in the associated notefile contains the following additional information on each cluster, provided when available:

* Distance from galactic center: the catalog value in kiloparsecs (kpc), followed in parentheses by the approximate equivalent value in light years (ly), calculated using the relation: ly = kpc *3260.
* The apparent photovisual magnitude of the brightest cluster star.
* The cluster's absolute photovisual integrated magnitude.
* The cluster's metallicity (Fe/H) relative to Sun.
* The cluster's Sawyer-Hogg concentration class (I to XII).
* The cluster's integrated spectral class.
* The number of known variable stars in the cluster.
* The cluster's radial velocity, in km/sec.

POSITION-LIST: The position-list MONELLA.LS, if loaded, will enable you to locate a globular cluster position using one of two lists:

* A list ordered alphanumerically (by cluster name).
* A list in Right Ascension order.

Remember that this is only a position-list; it does not actually display a cluster at the position you select. The cluster you select will appear at the position only if you have also loaded MONELLA.S9, or some other HyperSky catalog file which contains the globular cluster.
