LUGSKIFF (M0): Handbook and Catalog of Deep-Sky Objects (19910107)
FILE: lugskiff.m0 (3022 objects)

CONTENTS: Observing Handbook and Catalog of Deep-Sky Objects

DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset M-2, version 19910107 Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 1 (1993)

DESCRIPTION: This datafile is a cross-reference to the Observing Handbook and Catalog of Deep-Sky Objects, by Christian B. Luginbuhl and Brian A. Skiff, published by Cambridge University Press. The datafile gives page number references for all object descriptions, charts, sketches and photos included in the handbook, plus summary information about each object. This allows you to examine a selected HyperSky field for objects of interest, and then immediately locate their visual descriptions in the handbook. The excellant handbook descriptions summarize the appearance of objects in telescopes ranging in aperture from 6 to 30 cm (2.4 to 12 inches).

Included with the objects in the HyperSky fields are approximate outlines of the various galaxy cluster charts. These outlines help give you a sense of the scale of the handbook chart relative to the surrounding sky field.

DATA:

MAG: magnitude as given in the handbook catalog tables, or in the object description text. If the magnitude is not a V magnitude (or visual magnitude for planetaries) the magnitude type is noted in the comments (see below).

TYPE: object type generally according to the same 2-character code used in HED, the HyperSky data editor. See the paragraph "OBJECT DATAFILE CLASS TYPES" in the user's manual DATAFILES section for a description of these codes.

IDENTIFICATION: the object identification as provided in the handbook.

COMMENTS: Comments include the object description and size from the catalog tables, and the handbook page number where is the object is described. The object description is usually coded in a way specific to the object. These descriptive codes are explained in the handbook chapter "Deep-sky data sources" in the paragraphs discussing the particular kind of object. For some objects which appear only in the handbook catalog tables, the cited page number is for the catalog page listing the object.

Page references are also provided for maps, sketches or photos containing the object. Finally, a two-letter code may be present indicating the magnitude type. These include "mB" (blue magnitude), "mZ" (Zwicky CGCG magnitude) and "mVV" (MCG magnitude). See chapter "Deep-sky data sources" for information about these magnitude types.
