CONTENTS: Large Magellanic Cloud Cluster Catalog; Kontizas et al 1990

DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset M-10, version 19950120 Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 2 (1995)

DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains 1762 clusters from the 1990 catalog of clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud by Kontizas et al. The catalog was constructed from searches of the IIIa-J component of the ESO/SERC Southern Sky Atlas. The catalog contains coordinate and diameter measurements of 1762 clusters in a 25x25 degree area of sky centered on the LMC, but excluding the very crowded 3.5 square degree region around the bar.

The cluster distribution appears as two superimposed elliptical systems. The higher density inner system extends over about 8 degrees; the lower density outer system can be represented by a 13x10 degree disk inclined at 42 degrees to the line of sight. There are suggestions of two weak "arms" in the latter.

The catalog does not identify clusters as open or globular. Hence the HyperSky file designation for all clusters in this catalog is "C-". This results in all catalog clusters being represented by the HyperSky glyph for open clusters in field displays, even though some clusters are definitely globulars.

The HyperSky file is based on the version of the catalog available through the U.S. National Space Sciences Data Center (NSSDC) as Astronomical Data Center (ADC) catalog #7183. The catalog is also distributed by the Stellar Data Centre (CDS), Strasbourg, France, as catalog VII/183.

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: Right Ascension and Declination are based on the catalog 1950 positions, precessed to equinox 2000. Catalog positions were provided to an accuracy of 0.1 second in Right Ascension and 1" in declination.

MAG: No cluster magnitudes are provided in the catalog.

IDENTIFICATION: The catalog's cluster number.

COMMENTS: The comment line contains the following information, provided if available for each cluster:

* A line starting with "=" giving an alternate cluster name. Alternate names will start with one of the following acronyms:
NGC = NGC (New General Catalog)
IC = Index Catalogs
SL = Shapley & Lindsay 1963
LW = Lynga & Westerlund 1963
HS = Hodge & Sexton 1966
OH = Olszewski & al. 1988

A colon after a name indicates that the cluster is incorrectly marked in the Hodge-Wright Atlas (1967)

* A line starting with "dia =", giving the cluster diameter in light years (ly). This has been converted for HyperSky display from the diameter in parsecs (pc) given in the catalog. The conversion factor used (ly/pc) is 3.26.

* A line indicating whether the cluster is "Compact" or "Loose", based on the corresponding code in the catalog.
