CONTENTS: 1989 Fornax Cluster Galaxy Catalog
DATASET: These files come in HyperSky dataset G-17, version 19940309 Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 2 (1995)
DESCRIPTION: This datafile contains a total of 2678 galaxies as described in the paper "POPULATION STUDIES IN GROUPS AND CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES. II. A CATALOG OF GALAXIES IN THE CENTRAL 3.5 DEGREES OF THE FORNAX CLUSTER" by Henry C. Ferguson, as published in the Astronomical Journal, Vol. 98, No. 2, Aug. 1989.
The catalog contains galaxies within an area of some 40 degrees square, centered on the Fornax Cluster at RA 3h 35m, Dec -35.7 deg. The catalog is based on visual inspection of plates made with the du Pont 2.5 meter reflector at Las Campanas Observatory, and from digital photometry of an ESO/SRC blue survey plate covering the same area of the sky. The catalog is diameter-limited, having a limiting diameter of 17" at an isophote of B(T) ~26.5.
Determination of cluster membership is based mainly on galaxy morphology, cluster dwarf galaxies (with their low surface brightness) being easy to distinguish from background galaxies.
DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:
POSITION: The galaxy position for equinox 2000, precessed from the 1950 position provided in the catalog. Positions based on the Las Campanas plates are accurate to ~15"; positions based on the SRC plate are accurate to ~3".
MAG: Total blue apparent magnitude.
IDENTIFICATION: For identification purposes, the catalog has been split into two complementary sections. File fcc.g0 contains 340 galaxies classified by the author as definite or likely Fornax cluster members. HyperSky uses an "FCC" prefix for galaxies in this group. File fcb.g0 contains galaxies considered by the author as probably non-members. HyperSky uses an "FCB" prefix for galaxies in this group. Each set of galaxies was numbered separately by the author; these scheme is retained.
COMMENTS: The comment lines contain the following information, provided if available for each galaxy:
* A line describing cluster membership status, using one of the author's following phrases:
definite member
likely member
possible member
likely background
definite background
* A line giving the heliocentric radial velocity and its uncertainty in km/sec. This is provided for 89 of the galaxies in the survey.
* A line providing up to four alternate galaxy identification names.
* A line giving the diameter at an isophote of 26.5 B(J) arcsec^-2.
