CONTENTS: Catalog of Galaxies Behind the Milky Way; Saito, Ohtani et al, 1991

DATASET: This file comes in HyperSky dataset G-21, version 19950206. Availability on HyperSky CD-ROM: Vol. 2 (1995)

DESCRIPTION: This file contains about 7044 entries from the Catalog of Galaxies Behind the Milky Way, Volumes 1 and 2, by M. Saito, H. Ohtani, et al of the Department of Astronomy, Kyoto University Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan. Because of a slight overlap of entries in the two volumes, about 7000 actual individual galaxies are represented in the catalog.

The catalog covers a relatively small portion of the Milky Way, extending from galactic longitude 210 to 250 degrees, or roughly the region extending from Orion south to Puppis. The catalog includes parts of extreme eastern Orion, southwest Canis Minor, most of southern Monoceros and Canis Major, and much of northern Puppis, extending into western Pyxis. In celestial coordinates, the catalog covers approximately 6h< RA &lt9h10m, and -32< Dec <+3. A 60-degree HyperSky field, centered at RA=7h30m and Dec=-16, will show all catalog galaxies.

The catalog represents a systematic search for galaxies using copies of the UK Schmidt Southern Infrared Atlas of the Milky Way, covering about 900 square degrees. In the search galaxies with apparent sizes greater than 0.1 mm on film (6.7 arcsec in size) were detected by visual inspection. The search was performed by undergraduate students of a galactic astronomy program in Department of Astronomy, Kyoto University, in 1988 and 1989. The catalog is useful as a finding list of bright galaxies, peculiar galaxies, and nearby clusters of galaxies in the region behind the Milky Way.

The HyperSky file is based on a version of the catalog available through the U.S. National Space Sciences Data Center (NSSDC) as Astronomical Data Center (ADC) catalog #7140. It is also available from the Stellar Data Center (CDS), Strasbourg, France, as catalog VII/140.

DATA: The HyperSky datafile contains the following data from the catalog:

POSITION: Right Ascension and Declination are based on the catalog 1950 coordinates, precessed to equinox 2000. Catalog positions are provided to 1 minute in RA and 1 arc minute in Dec.

MAG: No magnitudes are provided in the catalog. For this reason, galaxies in this datafile will cease to appear on your display field if you set the limiting faint magnitude for ".g0" objects brighter than the default. (This is possible only when other galaxy datafiles containing magnitudes are also used.)

IDENTIFICATION: Catalog designations are of the form V-NNNN, where V is the volume number (1 or 2), and NNNN is the galaxy sequence number in the volume. The catalog contains 2411 entries from volume 1, and 4633 entries from volume 2. Both volumes have been combined into the single HyperSky datafile. In addition, some entries overlap. For example, galaxy CGMW 2-2540 is the same as CGMW 1-2310. All such cases of overlap are noted in the volume 2 galaxy identifications; see comments below.

COMMENTS: The comment lines following the identification contain the following information, if available, for each galaxy:

* A line starting with "type:", giving the morphological type of the galaxy. This will be one of the simple types "elliptical", "spiral", or "barred spiral". Or it will be an abbreviation indicating a more complex type, or uncertain type.

* A line indicating any distiguishing galaxy feature. Most often this is a brief description such as "Faint" or "Bright". But it can also include morphological comments such as "Asymm" (asymmetric) or "Ring". Close associations with other galaxies are indicated by terms like "Pair" or "Triple". The term "PN+galaxy" indicates a foreground planetary nebula overlaps the galaxy.

* One or more lines giving alternate galaxy identifications from other catalogs, one per line. ESO, IRAS and MCG identifications are most frequently seen; other catalog identifications (such as Zw) are seen less often. CGMW volume 2 galaxies are also occasionally identified with corresponding CGMW volume 1 entries.
